But since then, he has made his views known in articles, books and interviews, advocating a different approach to Pope Francis, who is seen as more progressive.
Pope Benedict still lives within the walls of the Vatican in a former monastery. In October, Catholic bishops from around the world gathered for a meeting, known as the synod, to discuss the future of the Church in the Amazon.
At the conclusion of that meeting, a document detailing issues affecting the Church was released. In it, there was a suggestion that in remote parts of the Amazon, older, married men should be ordained. South American bishops have advocated this in an effort to address the shortage of priests in the region. Pope Francis will consider it, along with many other proposals, including the environment and the role of women in the Church.
He is expected to make a decision on the matter within the next few months. There are already some exceptions, such as priests in Eastern Catholic Churches and Anglican priests who convert. Priestly celibacy was introduced about years ago. Before then clergy were often married - priestly celibacy is not explicitly required by the Bible but is a discipline required by the Church. For many, celibacy is a key part of being a Catholic priest, who is supposed to devote himself to the church and not be distracted by what some consider to be worldly concerns like a wife or a family.
For traditionalists, this is about the direction in which Pope Francis is taking the Church. Some critics regard the idea of allowing married priests in the Amazon as a pretext to abolishing celibacy as a requirement altogether. As Benedict's latest letter appeared on several right-wing Catholic websites overnight April 10, the Holy See Press Office seemed unprepared, unable even to respond to questions about whether the text was authentic.
In fact it was Archbishop Georg Ganswein, Benedict's personal secretary, that confirmed for many journalists that the text was indeed from the former pontiff. Gaillardetz and Bellitto, a professor of history at Kean University in New Jersey, both said Benedict's decision to continue wearing white after his resignation and to call himself the "pope emeritus," instead of some other title such as the "emeritus bishop of Rome," have not helped make clear that there is only one pope at a time.

Shortly after the release of Benedict's letter, one Italian journalist pointed to the official advice the Vatican gives to retired bishops about how to manage their relationships with their reigning diocesan prelates. Or, as theologian Natalia Imperatori-Lee put it about Benedict: "It is crucial that he and, perhaps more importantly those around him practice a ministry of silence lest it appear that he wants to undermine the current, only, Bishop of Rome, who is Francis.

It's been years since the last pope stepped down so it wasn't clear what Benedict would do after his resignation. In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, on Feb.
We want to connect with Canadians on the ground who are making the pilgrimage to the Vatican for the election of the next pope. If you or someone you know is going over or has already arrived send us an email at community cbc. On Tuesday, the Vatican shed some clarity on that issue by announcing that Benedict will keep his papal name, instead of reverting to Joseph Ratzinger, and will be referred to as "pope emeritus. Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said that Benedict himself made the decision in consultation with others.
However, the retiring pope will also have to give up a number of his ecclesiastical goods, including many that are steeped in the history and symbolism of the Church such as his papal ring and red shoes.
